Anthony Anselmo, a Spring Hill native, has achieved a remarkable feat in his college baseball career. On August 25, 2022, Anselmo arrived at Fort Lauderdale University, ready to start his second year as a college baseball player. That night, he received a call that changed everything – his father, Paul Anselmo, had died suddenly of a heart attack at 48.
Despite facing numerous challenges, Anselmo persevered and eventually earned a spot as a key pitcher for Bethune-Cookman University. During his recent season, he appeared in 16 games, posted a 2-1 record, and earned two saves while helping the Wildcats achieve one of the best seasons in school history. Anselmo’s journey to success was not easy, as he had to overcome the loss of his father and prove himself as a talented pitcher. His high school coach, Brandon DeRespiris, noted that Anselmo’s determination and resilience helped him grow stronger.
Anselmo’s baseball career began at Nature Coast Technical High School, where he played as a pitcher but wasn’t considered a top prospect. With a fastball clocked in the mid-80s, he didn’t initially attract college recruiters. However, he continued to work hard and eventually earned a spot at Fort Lauderdale University. After his father’s passing, Anselmo transferred to Bethune-Cookman University, where he found success and became a vital part of the team.
