SPRING HILL – The Springstead softball team’s impressive regular season came to a disappointing end on Thursday, May 7, as they lost 5-3 to visiting Wesley Chapel in the Region 5A-2 quarterfinal. The Eagles, led by head coach Craig Swartout, had high hopes for a long postseason run after finishing the regular season undefeated as county champions and district champions.
The game was a rematch of the District 5A-8 championship game played at Cypress Creek exactly one week earlier, which Springstead won 2-0. However, the Wildcats (20-8) got the better of the Eagles on April 21, winning 7-0 on Springstead’s home field. In this game, Wesley Chapel started a different pitcher in each of their three meetings with Springstead’s ace Alivia Miller. Despite a late rally, the Eagles fell short, with Swartout saying, “It’s tough. We just started a little too late.”
The game was marked by missed scoring opportunities in the early innings. Kaylana Lyons and Miller worked back-to-back walks to lead off the bottom of the second, but both were stranded in scoring position. Jazmin Hill doubled to start the top of the third for the Wildcats, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hailey Kean. Aly O’Dette was hit by a pitch, but the Eagles’ defense held strong. Springstead mounted a late rally, scoring three runs, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
Swartout expressed pride in his team’s fight, saying, “I’m proud of the way we fought. We didn’t quit. And we had a heck of a season.” He also acknowledged the impact of the team’s seniors, saying, “We’re going to miss our seniors tremendously. They’ve been the embodiment of what it means to be a Springstead Eagle.”
