Marvin Baynham, a candidate for Hernando County Commissioner District 4, is calling on local voters to think critically before accepting political attack ads at face value. Baynham, a firefighter and self-described conservative Christian, published an open letter warning residents that outside political groups are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to influence the local race through misleading mailers and repeated negative commercials.
Baynham argues the attacks are designed to distract voters from real local issues, including tax increases, overdevelopment, failing infrastructure, and a lack of government transparency and accountability in Hernando County. He says the strategy is simple: flood voters with accusations, repeat them often enough, and hope people assume the claims are true before they have time to verify the facts.
In his letter, Baynham urged residents to ask three key questions before accepting any political attack as truth. Who paid for the ad? Where is the proof? And why are outside groups spending so much money trying to shape a local county commission race? He says following the money and checking public records are the most effective tools voters have against manipulation. “Smear campaigns lose their power when voters slow down, look at the facts, and refuse to be manipulated,” Baynham wrote.
Baynham draws on his background as a firefighter to frame his approach to public service, saying servant leadership comes naturally to him. He is asking Hernando County voters to compare candidates on their actual records and listen to what each person says directly, rather than relying on third-party attack ads. He also encouraged residents to read local coverage from the Hernando Sun and review public records available through Hernando County government before casting their ballots.
