On Thursday, May 28, 2026, trappers with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission worked to capture several alligators at Lake Henderson in Inverness after a woman was bitten on the leg by an alligator last Saturday while swimming. The gator attack prompted a temporary closure of the park as wildlife officials worked to find the animal that caused her injuries.
By Thursday evening, trappers had plucked three gators from the lake, ranging in size from seven feet to longer. A total of four gators were secured in a traveling cage, with one reptile already trapped prior to the group’s arrival at the Inverness park. Florida tournament bass professional Shaw Grigsby, an agent/trapper with FWC, used high-tech equipment on his 21-foot Triton bass boat to search for the reptiles. Grigsby used Lowrance forward-facing sonar to locate the gators and a treble hook to catch them, then a long pole with a noose to secure the alligators and drag them to the dock.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission encourages people to be aware of their surroundings and take precautions when in areas where alligators are present. Residents and visitors can learn more about alligator safety and prevention on the FWC website.
