Hernando County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested three people on Saturday, July 18, for dangerous speeding incidents in Spring Hill and on the Suncoast Parkway. The arrests came after deputies witnessed two separate incidents of reckless driving that put other motorists at risk.
The first arrest came that morning when deputies clocked Rodney Watkins, 60, traveling 105 mph in a 70 mph zone on the Suncoast Parkway. Deputies pulled Watkins over, placed him under arrest, and transported him to the Hernando County Detention Center. His vehicle was towed from the scene.
Later that same day, a deputy observed two vehicles racing side-by-side on Spring Hill Drive near Deering Avenue. The cars were traveling 73 mph in a posted 45 mph zone, in what deputies described as an apparent street race. Gus Panos, 22, and Kyle Eicher, 18, were both arrested and charged with Racing on a Highway as a result of the incident.
Street racing and excessive speeding remain serious public safety concerns across Hernando County. Racing on a Highway is a criminal offense in Florida, carrying potential fines and jail time under Florida Statute 316.191. Residents who witness reckless driving are encouraged to contact the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office to report dangerous behavior on local roads.
