As summer officially arrives in Citrus County, residents and visitors alike are eager to enjoy the beautiful waterways and exciting outdoor activities. Beginning July 1, scallop season opens in Crystal River and Homosassa, offering a great opportunity to spend a morning on the water gathering fresh scallops and ending the day with great food, family, friends, and the perfect bottle of wine.
Before diving into wine pairings, a shout-out is in order for Norton’s Riverside Sports Bar & Grill in downtown Crystal River, a longtime local favorite located at 16 NE Fifth St. Norton’s has been a community gathering place for years, featuring a spacious outdoor seating area, lively bar, pool tables, and a water-town atmosphere. The author recently visited Norton’s to see the local band 40 Years 2 Late, who were outstanding. The staff was friendly, attentive, and welcoming, even with a packed house. The group enjoyed sliders, pretzel bites, Southwest egg rolls, and a fresh Greek salad, all of which arrived hot, flavorful, and well-prepared.
Fresh scallops are incredibly versatile and pair beautifully with a wide range of wines. For those looking to enjoy scallops and wine, Norton’s Riverside Sports Bar & Grill is a great place to start. With its lively atmosphere and delicious food, it’s an ideal spot to enjoy the summer season and scallop season.
