Local Briefs: VFW Day of Service, Lawn Seminars, and More

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4864 will be doing a cleanup of Citrus Springs Boulevard as part of the fifth annual VFW National Day of Service on Saturday, May 2. They will meet at 10199 N. Citrus Springs Blvd. at 9 a.m. This event is part of a nationwide effort led by veterans to give back to their communities.

The University of Florida/IFAS Citrus County Master Gardener Volunteers will be hosting a series of plant seminars throughout May, focusing on the four major turfgrasses used for Florida lawns. The seminars will cover St. Augustine grass, Bahia grass, Zoysia grass, and Bermuda grass, as well as turfgrass biology and other groundcovers for Florida lawns. The seminars will be held at various library locations, including Lakes Region in Inverness on May 4, Central Ridge in Beverly Hills on May 13, Floral City on May 20, Crystal River on May 25, and Homosassa on May 28. A Zoom presentation will also be available on May 16.

Other local events include a thrift sale by VFW Auxiliary Post 7122 on Saturday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to noon at the building next to the post, 8191 S. Florida Ave., Floral City. All items will be 50 percent off, with proceeds benefiting veterans and their families. The Citrus County Genealogical Society will meet on Sunday, May 12, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, 3474 W. Southern St., Lecanto, with speaker Jay H. Fonkert discussing “When there’s a Will, or Not.”

The Citrus County Abuse Shelter Association (CASA) is also seeking donations of household and cleaning supplies, as well as food and pantry items. Donations can be dropped off at the CASA Outreach office or at Carol’s Interiors and Floors in Homosassa. Additionally, the Democratic Women’s Club of Citrus County (DWCCC) will meet on Saturday, May 2, at the Lakes Region Library, 1511 Druid Road, Inverness, where they will announce the 2026 Scholarship recipients.
