Sharks stay hot, rout Zephyrhills 16-3

On Monday night, April 13, the Nature Coast Sharks softball team dominated the visiting Zephyrhills Bulldogs with a score of 16-3 in just 4 1/2 innings. The game took place at an unspecified location in Brooksville, Hernando County, Florida. Nature Coast head coach Jug Olmstead said, “The other group over there; young, energetic, came out, made three catches in the first inning. We came out sloppy and slow, played somewhat to their level. Took a little time to get our feet on the ground and then we got back going.”

The Bulldogs (2-11) actually retired the Sharks (15-4) in order on three flyouts in the bottom of the first inning, but the second inning went very differently. Caitlin Corrigan singled and Kam Ross walked to lead off in front of Juliana Gray, who hit a sharp grounder to the third baseman that was thrown away, allowing both runners to come across and Gray to race all the way to third. Reagan Wilkie drove in a third run on a groundout to shortstop. With two outs, eight straight batters reached base, including four walks, a hit batter and an error. Eliana Folasa singled up the middle to plate two, Ross was plunked with the bases full and Wilkie worked a base-loaded walk. Miranda Wiemer singled, stole second and scored on a wild pitch in the inning that ended up with an 8-0 advantage after 14 batters came to the plate.

Zephyrhills responded with three runs in the third. Briana Vega hit a two-run double over the left field line to make the score 8-3. However, the Sharks continued to add to their lead, scoring 8 more runs in the 4th and 5th innings to make the final score 16-3.

“Wins are wins. Not a super effort, but I like what the outcome was. We just didn’t play good all over, all the way around. It’s just one of those days. Monday games are always an issue, coming off of the weekend. I hate Monday games, but it is what it is. And a win’s a win. We’ll take it. Things have been good,” Olmstead said.
