On Friday, April 3, the Nature Coast baseball team secured a dramatic 4-3 walk-off victory over Umatilla, thanks to Bryce Hewell’s RBI single in the bottom of the final inning. The Sharks, led by head coach Danny Garofano, fell behind due to defensive miscues in the last two innings but managed to rally and take the win. This impressive comeback showcases the team’s determination and grit, with Garofano praising his players for their hard work and teamwork.
The game started strong for Nature Coast, with starting pitcher Mario DeAngelis escaping a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first inning. Aidan O’Nolan hit a leadoff double and scored on a wild pitch, giving the Sharks an early lead. However, Umatilla responded with a solo home run by Dominick Mathe in the top of the third inning, tying the game. The Sharks regained the lead in the bottom of the third, but Umatilla tied it up again in the top of the sixth inning. The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh, when Hewell’s walk-off single scored the winning run.
Garofano expressed pride in his team’s performance, saying, “We’re a very, very gritty group. We play hard. We know the game’s not over until the end.” The Sharks improved their record to 18-2, while Umatilla fell to 12-11. This win demonstrates Nature Coast’s readiness for the playoffs, which are just around the corner.
