On Wednesday, the Saint Leo University softball team made history by capturing the NCAA Division II National Championship. The team, led by a strong sense of sisterhood, defeated McKendree University in a two-game sweep to win the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Softball World Series. The Lions ended their dream season with a 5-2 win in the second game of the championship round at Frost Stadium at Warner Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The Saint Leo University Lions finished the season with a record of 54-3-1. They became the first Florida college to win a Division II softball national title since Florida Southern College in 1993. The team’s victory marked the school’s second national championship in any sport, following the 2016 men’s golf team’s title. The Lions received support from their community, with several hundred students, faculty members, administrators, staff, alumni, and parents attending the games in Chattanooga.
The team’s journey to the championship included victories against St. Thomas Aquinas University, Cal State-San Marcos, and West Texas A&M in the preliminary rounds of the tournament, which started on May 28. The Lions also had a chartered bus full of fans that left Saint Leo on Tuesday afternoon to show their support.
The Saint Leo University softball team’s national championship win is a significant achievement for the school and the local community. The team will return to campus to celebrate their victory.
