The Crystal River Airport runway expansion review is moving forward. On Monday, the Citrus County Board of Commissioners heard an update on the project, which aims to improve safety and efficiency at the airport.
The $3.5 million project involves extending the runway from 4,300 to 5,000 feet and widening it from 60 to 75 feet. The expansion will allow the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and increase its economic impact on the local community. According to airport officials, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is providing $2.5 million in funding for the project, with the county contributing the remaining $1 million.
The review process is critical to ensuring that the project meets all regulatory requirements and is safe for airport users. The county has hired a consultant to conduct an environmental assessment and evaluate potential impacts on the surrounding area.
