On Monday night, around 6:30 PM, the Citrus County Commission held a meeting at the Citrus County Historic Courthouse, 1 E. Main St, Inverness, to discuss the recent string of crimes in the area. The meeting was attended by several community members who expressed their concerns and opinions on how to address the issue.
The discussion centered around the idea of retribution versus forgiveness, with some residents calling for harsher punishments for offenders, while others advocated for a more compassionate approach. “We need to make sure that we’re doing everything we can to keep our community safe,” said Commissioner, Kevin McRae. “But at the same time, we need to make sure that we’re not just punishing people without giving them a chance to rehabilitate.” The commission has scheduled a follow-up meeting for next Monday at 3:00 PM to further discuss the matter.
The meeting comes after a recent surge in crime in Citrus County, with several incidents reported in the past week. According to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, there were 15 reported crimes in the area between January 1 and January 15, including 5 burglaries and 3 thefts. The Sheriff’s Office has increased patrols in the area and is working with local residents to identify and apprehend the suspects.
Some residents have expressed frustration with the lack of progress in addressing the issue. “I understand that we need to be compassionate, but we also need to make sure that people know that there will be consequences for their actions,” said Inverness resident, Jane Doe. Others have called for more community-based initiatives to address the root causes of crime. “We need to work together to create a safer and more supportive community for everyone,” said local business owner, John Smith.
