A rabies alert has been issued in Citrus County after a kitten tested positive for the virus in Floral City. According to the Citrus County Health Department, the kitten was found on Wednesday, March 15, around 10:30 a.m., on Southeast 5th Avenue in Floral City.
The kitten, which was about 6 months old, was taken to a local animal shelter where it was euthanized and tested for rabies. The test results came back positive on Thursday, March 16. As a result, a 60-day rabies alert has been issued for the area around Southeast 5th Avenue in Floral City. Residents are advised to keep their pets indoors and to avoid contact with any stray animals.
“We urge everyone to be cautious and take precautions to protect themselves and their pets from potential exposure to rabies,” said Dr. Maria Z. Rodriguez, Health Officer for Citrus County. “If you see an animal acting strangely, do not approach it. Instead, contact local animal control or law enforcement for assistance.”
Residents can protect themselves and their pets by keeping vaccinations up to date, avoiding contact with stray animals, and keeping trash cans tightly sealed. The Citrus County Health Department will provide updates on the rabies alert as more information becomes available.
