New Animal Shelter Opens in Citrus County

The long-awaited animal shelter in Citrus County is now open. The shelter, located at 3100 W. State Road 44, Inverness, was officially opened on Monday, March 18, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.

The new shelter is a significant improvement over the previous facility, with more space for animals and better equipment for caring for them. Citrus County Animal Services Director, Tammy Hardy, said, “We’re finally here, and we’re excited to provide a better experience for the animals and our community.” The shelter has a capacity for 1,200 animals and features state-of-the-art kennels, a medical room, and a adoption center.

The shelter will be open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for adoptions and animal surrenders. The public can visit the shelter to view available animals for adoption. For more information, people can call (352) 533-7387 or visit the shelter’s website at https://www.citruscounty.org/Departments/Animal-Services.

The new shelter is a result of a collaborative effort between Citrus County and the Citrus County Animal Shelter Foundation. The project was funded by a combination of public and private funds, including a $1.2 million grant from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
