A Pasco County mother is remembering her 24-year-old son, a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Road Ranger, who was killed while helping at an I-75 crash on Monday, August 21, around 10:30 a.m.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on I-75 near mile marker 292, in the area of Spring Hill, Hernando County. The victim, Christopher Kevin McInerney, was a Road Ranger with FDOT. He was helping at the scene of a crash when a vehicle struck him. McInerney’s mother, Donna McInerney, described her son as a kind and caring person who loved his job. “My heart is broken,” she said. “He was always helping people, and that’s what he died doing.”
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. The driver of the vehicle that struck McInerney has been arrested and charged with hit-and-run. The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.
FDOT Secretary, Jared Perdue, released a statement saying, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague, Christopher McInerney. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Christopher McInerney is survived by his mother, Donna, and his father, Kevin McInerney. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support his family.
