A 23-year-old man, Dontae Lamar McGowan, is facing charges after allegedly using a fake Walmart Spark app to steal game systems from a store in Citrus County, Florida.
According to the Citrus County Chronicle, the incident occurred on January 3, 2023, at a Walmart store located at 1000 W. State Road 44, Inverness, around 10:30 a.m. McGowan reportedly used the fake app to scan the items and make it appear as though they had been purchased. The items, which included a PlayStation 5 and an Xbox Series X, had a total value of $1,043.
The Inverness Police Department received a report of the incident and began investigating. McGowan was subsequently arrested and charged with grand theft. He is being held at the Citrus County Detention Center with a bond set at $1,500.
The use of fake apps to commit theft is a growing concern for retailers and law enforcement agencies. Walmart has a legitimate Spark app that allows customers to scan items and pay for them using their mobile devices. However, fake apps like the one used in this incident can be used to deceive store employees and avoid detection.
McGowan’s arrest highlights the importance of vigilance and verification in preventing and detecting crimes. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies in the area are working to combat retail theft and other forms of property crime.
