On June 6, the Central Ridge Library in Inverness, Citrus County, was filled with the sounds of drums, laughter, and dancing as over 100 children, parents, and grandparents gathered for the Citrus County Libraries Kids Drum Circle. The event, led by Steve Turner of Giving Tree Music, was part of the Citrus County Library System’s “Unearth a Story” Summer Reading Program.
The drum circle, which transformed the normally quiet library into a lively community gathering space, encouraged families of all ages to make noise, move to the rhythm, and experience the power of music together. Three-year-old Lee O’Leary enthusiastically banged on a Remo Gathering Drum, while her mother, Mary Caroline O’Leary, said they learned about the event while attending the Inverness Summer Festival the previous week. Nearby, Jasmine Patro, 3, danced to the beat alongside friends Clove Park, 6, and Quill Park, 4, as Turner guided the crowd through a variety of rhythms and interactive musical activities.
The event was a huge success, with many families participating and having fun together. Alison Patro, Jasmine’s mother, said her family regularly takes advantage of the monthly programs offered by the library. The Citrus County Libraries Kids Drum Circle is a great example of how the library is working to engage with the community and provide fun and educational programs for families.
