A recent discussion at the No Data Forum in Citrus County has raised concerns about a planned hyperscaler data center at the Holder Industrial site. The expert speaker, who designs and builds various data centers, including hyperscaler systems, cited the Sabal Trail Pipeline, Duke Energy transmission lines, and a $2.8 million Florida grant for water and sewer infrastructure as reasons why the site is suitable for the project.
The grant, provided by the state of Florida, has sparked debate about the benefits of the project for local residents. Critics argue that the hyperscaler data center will be the sole benefactor of the infrastructure investments, which were partially funded by Florida taxpayers. The data center will require significant energy resources, and critics claim that the end user will need to reimburse taxpayers for the full cost of infrastructure already provided.
The planned data center has also raised questions about job creation. According to a Wall Street article, a similar data center project created only 39,500 permanent jobs, which is a relatively small number compared to the initial claims of thousands of good-paying jobs. The Citrus County Chronicle reached out to local officials for comment but did not receive a response.
The project highlights the need for transparency and accountability in economic development deals. As the county moves forward with the project, residents are urging officials to prioritize the interests of local taxpayers and ensure that the benefits of the data center are shared equitably.
