Heart screenings offered next week in Citrus County as new state law impacts student athletes

Citrus County Schools will offer heart screenings next week for student athletes in response to a new state law. The screenings will take place on January 24 and 25 at the Citrus County Athletic Department, located at 1400 S. Pine Ave, Crystal River. Students who plan to participate in sports must undergo an electrocardiogram (ECG) and receive written clearance from a doctor before they can start practicing.

The new state law, which went into effect on January 1, requires all student athletes to undergo a cardiac evaluation before participating in sports. The law aims to prevent sudden cardiac deaths in young athletes. Citrus County Schools is working to ensure that all student athletes are compliant with the new law. “We want to make sure that all of our student athletes are safe and healthy as they participate in sports,” said Dr. Gregory D. Gianforcaro, Superintendent of Citrus County Schools. The heart screenings will be provided at no cost to the students.

Students who have already had an ECG as part of a sports physical will not need to undergo another screening. However, students who have not had an ECG as part of a sports physical or who have a family history of heart problems are encouraged to attend the screening. Parents and guardians are asked to accompany their child to the screening and provide any necessary medical information.

The Citrus County Athletic Department encourages students and parents to contact them with any questions or concerns about the heart screenings or the new state law. More information can be found on the Citrus County Schools website or by contacting the athletic department directly.
