Florida Film Festival at Old Courthouse Heritage Museum in Inverness

The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum in Inverness is hosting the Florida Film Festival, a showcase of movies filmed in Florida. The festival kicked off on Thursday, May 28, with the screening of “Gal Young ’Un,” an award-winning independent film by Victor Nunez of Tallahassee. The next film to be screened is “Tarzan Finds a Son!” on June 11 at 7 p.m., with a talk at 6:45 p.m.

The film “Tarzan Finds a Son!” is from 1939 and stars Johnny Weissmuller, Maureen O’Sullivan, and Johnny Sheffield. The movie was filmed at Silver Springs State Park and tells the story of Tarzan and Jane adopting a baby boy who survives a plane crash. The festival is organized by the Inverness Cultural Heritage Council, an arm of the Citrus County Historical Society. Steve Hrycaj, chair of the council, said the group came up with the idea for a film festival of movies shot in Florida.

The festival aims to showcase the state’s rich film history, with movies filmed in various locations across Florida, including community stores, post offices, plantations, and aquariums. Other films featured in the festival include those shot at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, which is home to Winter the dolphin from the movie “Dolphin Tale,” and Elvis’ “Roustabout.”

For more information on the festival, visit the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum’s website or contact Steve Hrycaj at the Inverness Cultural Heritage Council. The museum is located in the historic Citrus County Courthouse building in downtown Inverness.
