A 39-year-old Dunnellon resident, Steven Sheehan, was arrested inside the Walmart Supercenter on Cortez Boulevard in Hernando County on Monday after a shooting incident began in Citrus County. Sheehan was wanted on charges of aggravated assault with a firearm from an incident near the Publix at the intersection of U.S. 19 and U.S. 98, just over the county line into Citrus, around 8 a.m.
Sheehan fled an attempted traffic stop while driving on Forest Oaks Boulevard at 8:05 a.m. Deputies spotted him again at the Walmart, where he drove up to the doors, placed two guns on top of his car, and ran into the store. A deputy followed him in and knocked him down, arresting him near the customer service area at the front of the store. Sheehan was unarmed but carrying a Bible. Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis stated that the suspect may be suffering from mental illness. Sheehan was charged with two counts of improper exhibit of a firearm or dangerous weapon and fleeing/eluding police.
