Elderly Bicyclist Killed in U.S. 41 Crash, Motorcyclist Seriously Injured

A bicyclist was killed and a motorcyclist seriously injured in a crash along U.S. 41 in Pasco County, Florida, on Thursday night. The crash occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. just north of Swans Landing Drive. An 81-year-old man from Lutz, identified as John Smith, was traveling southbound on U.S. 41 on a Kawasaki motorcycle when an 87-year-old bicyclist from Land O’ Lakes, identified as James Johnson, suddenly appeared in his path.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Smith swerved to avoid Johnson but lost control of his motorcycle, causing him to crash. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The FHP is investigating the incident and has not released further details.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and local emergency services responded to the scene. The crash is under investigation, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, this is the second fatal bicycle crash in Pasco County this year. The county has seen an increase in cycling accidents in recent years, prompting concerns about road safety.
