A Crystal River man was arrested on Sunday, July 12, for felony animal cruelty after Citrus County deputies responded to a home on West Sandra Street for a wellness check. The sheriff’s office said deputies were greeted with the smell of “decay” when they arrived at the scene.
The incident occurred around the morning of July 12, at a home on West Sandra Street in Crystal River. Deputies began walking the perimeter of the home when they discovered “rotted remains” of animals. The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody and charged with felony animal cruelty.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation. Animal cruelty is a serious offense in Florida, and the state has laws in place to protect animals from neglect and abuse. According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, animal cruelty is a felony in Florida, punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
