A Crystal River dog breeder is facing multiple animal cruelty charges after authorities seized several dogs from his property. On January 15, 2026, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office received a tip about possible animal neglect at 12345 Southeast 5th Avenue, Crystal River, Florida 34475. Deputies responded to the location and found multiple dogs in various stages of neglect and distress.
The suspect, identified as 35-year-old John Michael Smith, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty. According to investigators, Smith was operating a dog breeding business on the property and had failed to provide adequate care and living conditions for the animals. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office worked with the Citrus County Animal Control to seize the dogs and transport them to a local animal shelter for care and rehabilitation.
The charges against Smith include failure to provide adequate food, water, and shelter, as well as failure to provide necessary veterinary care. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed. Smith is being held at the Citrus County Detention Center on $10,000 bond.
