Crystal River Advances Grant Planning, Approves Spending Items

The City of Crystal River is seeking public input on a proposed application to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for a fiscal year 2027 Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). On Monday night, the Crystal River City Council held a required public hearing to gather input on the grant, which could provide up to $750,000 in funding for projects benefiting low- to moderate-income residents.

City Manager Audra Curts said the city qualifies for funding aimed at projects such as infrastructure improvements, including roads, sidewalks, water and sewer lines, stormwater systems, and park facilities, as well as housing rehabilitation. The city is seeking input before narrowing its focus ahead of a second required hearing at the next council meeting. The application deadline is less than 30 days away.

In addition to the grant planning, the council approved two spending items tied to infrastructure and utility operations. The city will purchase a new truck and close out a project with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). Curts said the city is eligible to apply for funding in the neighborhood revitalization, commercial revitalization, and housing rehabilitation categories.

The city is asking for public input on potential projects, including the improvement of parks. One potential item is the improvement of Jim LeGrone Park in Crystal River, where teams recently competed in a pickleball tournament.

Residents can provide input on the CDBG application at the next council meeting. More information on the grant and the city’s application process can be found on the city’s website or by contacting City Manager Audra Curts.
