Citrus County Residents Sound Off on Local Issues

Residents of Citrus County are speaking out on various local issues, from development and water conservation to road safety and law enforcement. On April 14, 2026, several letters to the editor were published in the Citrus County Chronicle, highlighting concerns and opinions on these topics.

Rebecca Bays, a local politician, has been criticized for her support of development and industry growth in the area. One resident expressed skepticism about Bays’ motives, suggesting that she is more focused on bringing in new residents and businesses than on preserving the county’s natural resources. The resident noted that Bays has been attending local events, such as Little League baseball games, and meeting with community leaders, including mayors and chamber members.

Other residents have expressed concerns about road safety. One driver reported encountering two unlicensed ATVs with young drivers on Road 39/439 in southern Citrus County on Sunday at 12 noon. The resident questioned why the sheriff’s department was not patrolling the area, citing the danger posed to the children driving the vehicles.

Additionally, residents have raised questions about road closures and development projects. One resident expressed frustration about the closure of Sixth Street in Crystal River, which has forced them to take a longer route to get to US-19. Another resident agreed with Janet Barek’s opposition to selling the Betz Farm for development, citing concerns about water conservation and the aquifer.

The concerns raised by these residents highlight ongoing issues in Citrus County, including development, road safety, and water conservation.
