Citrus County Commission Weighs Sheriff’s Takeover of Jail Amid Smuggling Probe Fallout

The Citrus County Commission will consider a proposal to have the sheriff’s office take over jail operations, following a recent investigation into contraband smuggling at the facility. The meeting is set for April 11 at 3:00 PM at the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners Chambers, 405A W. Main St., Inverness.

The investigation, led by the Florida Department of Corrections and the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, resulted in the arrest of several individuals, including a former jail deputy, on charges related to contraband smuggling. The probe has raised concerns about the safety and security of the jail, which has led to discussions about the potential takeover by the sheriff’s office.

In a related event, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Citrus County will host its annual “Hops for Hope” fundraiser on April 11 at the Plantation on the River, 8525 NE. 17th St., Crystal River. The event will feature live music, food, and drinks, as well as a silent auction and raffle. Proceeds will support CASA’s efforts to provide a safe haven for abused and neglected children in Citrus County.

The Citrus County Chronicle reported that the jail investigation has led to a renewed focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of inmates and staff. The proposed takeover by the sheriff’s office is seen as a potential solution to address these concerns. A decision on the proposal is expected to be made at the commission meeting.
