Norma Kania turned 100 years old on Friday, July 10, surrounded by 40 to 50 family members and friends at a festive celebration hosted at Vitality Living in the Brooksville area. The party, themed “A Lucky Lady Turns 100,” honored two of Norma’s favorites: the color green and the song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Decorations filled the room with bright shades of green, colorful rainbows, and playful $100 bills. And if you ask Norma the secret to reaching a century, her answer is refreshingly simple: “white wine with ice.”
Loved ones traveled from across the country to mark the milestone, coming from North Tonawanda, New York; Austin, Texas; Tampa; and Mount Dora. Savannah Adams, engagement director at Vitality Living, said the turnout reflected just how many lives Norma has touched over her 100 years. Originally from Pennsylvania, Norma was raised in North Tonawanda, New York, before eventually making her way to Florida to be closer to family.
Norma built a career as a secretary for the North Tonawanda elementary school system, retiring in 1982. Her daughter, Sue Loveday, said her mother was part of a pioneering generation of women who entered the workforce while still raising families. “My mom was in the very beginning of that stage where women weren’t housewives, that they had a job,” Sue said. “She started working when my brother was in kindergarten. That’s kind of cool because up until then, women kind of just stayed home.” After World War II, Norma met her husband, Henry, while out dancing with a friend, and the two married and raised three children: Sue, Mike, and Bob.
Over the decades, Norma’s family has grown considerably. She now has seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family settled in Florida in the 1980s when Sue and Mike moved to the state, and Norma followed to stay close to them. Sue said her mother became a little overwhelmed and teary-eyed during the celebration but cherished every moment. Reaching 100 is a rare milestone, and for Norma Kania, it came with plenty of green decorations, a beloved song, and a glass of white wine on ice.
