An 87-year-old man died and another person is recovering after a Tesla in autopilot mode crashed in Pasco County on Tuesday night. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on State Road 54 at the intersection with Grand Oaks Drive.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office reported that the Tesla, driven by the 87-year-old victim, was traveling westbound on State Road 54 when it collided with a tree. The victim, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person, a 35-year-old passenger, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating the incident, as the Tesla was operating in autopilot mode at the time of the crash. The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office is working with the NHTSA and the Florida Highway Patrol to determine the cause of the accident.
