Watercolorist Edward Velez of Crystal River Dedicated to Perfection in Every Brushstroke

Crystal River, FL – Watercolorist Edward Velez, 88, of Crystal River, Citrus County, Florida, has dedicated his life to creating perfect watercolor paintings. His latest work, a mermaid surrounded by fish, a turtle, and a treasure chest with shipwrecks in the background, has been put on hold since the passing of his wife, Smirna, in February 2025. Ed Velez says he hasn’t been able to paint since Smirna’s death, but he’s now working to complete the mermaid painting and a portrait of his late wife.

Velez, a perfectionist, uses tracing paper to revise his work, ensuring that every brushstroke is flawless. His painting, “Home Field Advantage,” recently won a blue ribbon at the Citrus County Fair. Velez’s commercial art business was supported by his wife of 67 years, who managed the household and finances, allowing him time to focus on his craft. Now, with plenty of time alone, Velez is considering new projects, including commissions, if the conditions are right.
