United Way of Citrus County Celebrates 40 Years of Community Service

More than 267 community leaders, business owners, educators, volunteers and supporters gathered Tuesday evening on May 12 at Black Diamond Ranch to celebrate the 40th anniversary of United Way of Citrus County. The milestone event honored four decades of service, philanthropy and community collaboration that began in 1986 with just 11 nonprofit agencies.

United Way of Citrus County CEO George Schmalstig led a powerful question-and-answer session with founding leaders Gerry Mulligan and Steve Lamb, reflecting on the organization’s remarkable beginnings. Mulligan, longtime editor and publisher of the Citrus County Chronicle, shared how explosive county growth in the 1980s revealed overwhelming community needs and inspired renewed determination after early challenges. He credited Wilson Burns as the driving force who never gave up on the vision.

Steve Lamb, one of the three founders alongside Mulligan and Burns, reflected on launching United Way of Citrus County in 1986 with the dedicated core group and determination that laid the foundation for four decades of local impact. The evening celebrated the organization’s powerful legacy of helping local families through times of hardship and growth throughout Citrus County.

Guests were welcomed by United Way staff and volunteers, including Community Engagement Coordinator Jess Maloney, Community Impact Coordinator Jen Sloane, and Publix volunteers Sarah Thomas and Chase Santangelo. The volunteers helped attendees find their tables and set the tone for an evening centered on gratitude and community spirit, recognizing the organization’s continued commitment to serving Citrus County residents.
