Brooksville, FL – The Nature Coast Tech Sharks outlasted the Weeki Wachee Hornets 20-13 in a district semifinal game on Tuesday night. The Sharks, led by head coach Ian Wald, avenged a one-point loss to the Hornets earlier this season. The game was a rematch of last year’s district semifinal, which also ended with a one-score difference.
The Hornets drew first blood with a nine-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Karly Pasmore to junior Alissa Cox on fourth down. However, the Sharks responded with a six-play touchdown drive, capped off by a 23-yard scoring toss from senior signal caller Madelyn DePetrillo to freshman Aurianah Whittaker. The Sharks’ pair repeated this connection with an identical play and result late in the third quarter. DePetrillo threw for 3 touchdowns, while Whittaker caught 2 touchdowns.
Coach Wald praised the Hornets, saying they are “unbelievable” and “well-coached.” He also noted that Whittaker, who started her freshman season on the junior varsity squad, has been a valuable addition to the team. “She is an all-star soccer player,” Wald said. “We rotate her to a bunch of different positions, which keeps the other girls fresh and gives her a bunch of touches in different spots.”
The Sharks will advance to the district finals with a record of 12-4, while the Hornets end their season with a record of 12-3.
