A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing U.S. 19 in Citrus County on Monday night, officials said. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on U.S. 19, near the intersection with Southeast 5th Avenue in Homosassa.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle involved in the incident remained on the scene and cooperated with authorities. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. The pedestrian death is the second traffic-related fatality in Citrus County this year.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol are urging drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution and follow traffic laws to prevent such incidents in the future. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, a total of 701 pedestrian fatalities occurred in Florida in 2020, with many of these incidents occurring in areas with high traffic volumes.
