D.S. Parrott Middle School administrators unveiled a proposal to establish the Dynamic Sports Performance Academy at a Hernando County School Board workshop on June 23, aiming to address a growing student retention crisis in the district. Principal Dr. Christopher Clifford and new Assistant Principal Lauren Schumacher presented the plan, which targets a launch date of the 2027-28 school year.
Dr. Clifford framed the proposal as a direct response to competition from private academies and extracurricular programs pulling students away from public education. “It’s our burden to bear. We have to prove and show reasons why students should stay with public education,” Dr. Clifford told the board. “What parents are finding is there are opportunities for their child to participate in the thing they love and also get educated. We are no longer the single conduit for students between their young years and their future success.”
Data presented to the board showed that across Hernando, Citrus, Pasco, and Sumter counties, roughly 6,000 middle school students, or about 33% of all middle schoolers, participate in athletics. An additional 20% take part in outside programs such as travel baseball, youth softball leagues, club volleyball, junior golf, and travel soccer. Schumacher noted that private options are increasingly popular. “Many things are available to students after school hours and people are taking advantage of this,” she said. The presentation highlighted three Florida private schools combining academics and athletics, including IMG Academy in Bradenton, DME Academy in Daytona Beach, and Montverde Academy in Montverde as models for the proposed program.
However, those private academies carry steep price tags and require significant travel commitments from families. A public sports academy at Parrott Middle School would offer a local, cost-free alternative for Hernando County families seeking the same blend of athletic development and rigorous academics. The proposal positions Parrott as a magnet-style option designed to keep students enrolled in the public school system while giving them access to structured sports performance training during the school day. The Hernando County School District has not yet voted on the proposal, and further review is expected before any formal approval ahead of the 2027-28 target launch.
