Nuclear Plant Nears Final Shutdown

The Duke Energy-owned Crystal River Nuclear Plant in Citrus County is nearing its final shutdown. The plant’s Unit 3 reactor, which has been in operation since 1977, is set to permanently cease power production on January 25, 2027.

The Citrus County Board of Commissioners recently approved a temporary moratorium on data centers in the county, giving officials time to gather information on the impact of these facilities. The moratorium, which was proposed by Commissioner Scott Boyett, will remain in effect for six months. This pause will allow the county to develop regulations and ensure that data centers align with the county’s comprehensive plan. The board’s decision was unanimous, with commissioners expressing a desire to balance economic growth with environmental and community concerns.

The Crystal River Nuclear Plant, located about 80 miles north of Tampa, has been a significant part of the local economy for decades. The plant’s shutdown will have a substantial impact on the community, with approximately 1,000 workers employed at the facility. Duke Energy has stated that it will work closely with local leaders to ensure a smooth transition and minimize the economic impact of the shutdown.

Residents and local officials are watching closely as the county navigates the development of new regulations for data centers. Commissioner Boyett emphasized the importance of responsible growth, saying, “We want to make sure that we are planning for the future and that we are doing it in a way that is consistent with our values and our comprehensive plan.” The county’s planning and zoning department will work with stakeholders to develop new rules for data centers, which will be presented to the board for approval.
