On Monday, February 26, 2024, around 10:30 a.m., Citrus County School officials received an anonymous threat of an active shooter at Crystal River High School, located at 2005 SE 5th St, Crystal River, Florida. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and Citrus County School District officials immediately responded to the threat.
After conducting a thorough investigation, officials determined that there was no active shooter on campus and no imminent threat to students or staff. The school was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure, and students were accounted for. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Department of Education were also notified.
The school district takes all threats seriously and is working closely with local law enforcement agencies to identify the individual who made the threat. The incident is under investigation. In a statement, Crystal River High School Principal, Dr. Michelle Miller, said, “The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority. We will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure that our school community remains safe.”
Students and staff were evacuated from the building and reunited with their parents at a designated location. The school day resumed normally after the lockdown was lifted. The Citrus County School District encourages anyone with information about the threat to come forward and contact the authorities.
