New Port Richey’s James Irwin: The Eighth Man on the Moon

James B. Irwin, a native of New Port Richey, Florida, achieved his childhood dream of becoming an astronaut and walking on the moon. Irwin was born on March 17, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and moved to New Port Richey with his family in September 1941. He attended Pierce Elementary School and later graduated from New Port Richey High School.

Irwin’s remarkable journey to the moon began with his selection as an astronaut in 1962. He flew on the Apollo 15 mission in July 1971, becoming the eighth man to walk on the moon. During his time on the lunar surface, Irwin spent over 18 hours exploring the Hadley Rille, a vast, ancient riverbed. His contributions to the success of the Apollo program have left a lasting legacy in the field of space exploration.

The West Pasco Historical Society Museum features an exhibit dedicated to Irwin’s life and achievements, showcasing his remarkable story and inspiring future generations of scientists and explorers. The exhibit includes artifacts and photographs from Irwin’s time as an astronaut, as well as a replica of the Apollo 15 command module.

Irwin’s connection to New Port Richey is still celebrated today, with the city honoring him as a hometown hero. In 2021, the city council presented Irwin with a key to the city, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field of space exploration.
