New Animal Shelter Opens in Citrus County

The wait is over for a new animal shelter in Citrus County. The Citrus County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center officially opened its doors on January 15, 2023, at 3100 W. State Road 44, Inverness.

The new shelter, which was a collaborative effort between Citrus County and the Humane Society of the United States, features state-of-the-art facilities and a more efficient adoption process. According to Citrus County Commissioner, Tom Adams, “The new shelter is a huge improvement over the old facility and will allow us to better serve the animals and residents of Citrus County.” The shelter is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

The new shelter has a capacity for 1,200 animals and features a variety of amenities, including a veterinary clinic, a behavioral rehabilitation area, and a spacious adoption area. The shelter is also equipped with a crematorium and a pet cemetery.

The old shelter, which was located on North US 19, was closed on January 14, 2023, and animals were transferred to the new facility. The Humane Society of the United States provided significant support and funding for the new shelter, which is expected to improve animal welfare and increase adoption rates in Citrus County.
