On Thursday, June 11, at around 2:30 a.m., four juveniles attempted to break into a car in the parking lot of Vitality Living Spring Hill, an assisted living facility located on Evergreen Woods Trail in Spring Hill. A staff member, who was taking a break in the vehicle, was able to scare them off, forcing them to flee the scene.
Sheriff Al Nienhuis reported that deputies were able to set up a perimeter and catch all four individuals, who were between the ages of 12-15. This incident is part of a recent spree of car burglaries in the area, with 3-4 groups of juveniles committing 10-15 break-ins over the last month and a half, with as many as 20 cars broken into per night. In total, 10-15 arrests have been made.
Nienhuis advised parents to be aware of their children’s whereabouts at night, especially during the summer months. He also recommended that residents lock their car doors at night and not leave firearms in their vehicles. The community’s tips and reports of suspicious activity have led to these arrests.
Residents can help prevent such incidents by being vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity. For more information and to report tips, residents can contact the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.
