Marine’s Cremated Remains Returned to Family After Yard Sale Discovery

The cremated remains of a U.S. Marine were returned to his family on Friday, April 12, after being discovered at a yard sale in Pasco County. The remains were found on March 30 at a yard sale in the 8200 block of Grand Boulevard in New Port Richey.

The family of 20-year-old U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Hunter J. Harris, who died on Oct. 31, 2021, had been searching for his cremated remains since they went missing in December. Harris’s family had been in contact with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Marine Corps to report the remains missing. The remains were identified through DNA analysis and returned to the family on Friday.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marine Corps worked together to investigate the incident and return the remains to Harris’s family. The family expressed gratitude to the agencies involved in the investigation and to those who helped bring closure to their situation.

Lance Corporal Harris’s cremated remains were returned to his family with full military honors. The U.S. Marine Corps and the Department of Veterans Affairs continue to work with Harris’s family to ensure they receive the support they need.
