Local Briefs: Citrus County Community Events and Opportunities

The Citrus County Abuse Shelter Association (CASA) is seeking donations to restock its pantry. The shelter needs household and cleaning supplies, including paper towels, Kleenex, trash bags, laundry detergent, and Lysol spray. Food donations, such as crackers, tea, eggs, butter, sugar, kid-friendly drinks and snacks, milk, cheese, Ramen, beverages, mac and cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables, lunch meat, bacon, chicken or ground chicken, beef or ground beef, pork or ground pork, Ranch and other salad dressings/condiments, cooking spices, juice, and bread are also appreciated. To make donations easier, CASA has created an Amazon Wishlist: a.co/c6Wobgs. Donations can be dropped off at the CASA Outreach office between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at 1100 E. Turner Camp Road, Inverness. Alternatively, donations can be dropped off at Carol’s Interiors and Floors, 6410 S. Suncoast Blvd. in Homosassa.

The Florida State Parks District 2 will host the Junior Ranger Jamboree at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature activities, programs, and park rangers from a dozen different Florida State Parks. Young visitors can become Junior Rangers, earning their badge and getting stamps toward getting a Junior Ranger pin. The event will take place in the park’s Garden of the Springs.

Other local events include the Homosassa River Alliance’s annual picnic at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at the Old Homosassa Civic Club. The picnic will be potluck style, with the HRA providing barbecue. The Citrus County Beekeepers are offering a scholarship to a Citrus County 4-H or FFA student in grades 8 through 10. The US Coast Guard Auxiliary Homosassa Flotilla will hold a boating safety class on May 16, the first day of National Safe Boating Week.

The League of Women Voters of Citrus County will host a School Board Candidate meet and greet on Wednesday, May 13, at the Coastal Region Library in Crystal River. The Antique Tackle Show will take place at Plantation Resort on Crystal River on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16. The Inverness Art Co-Op will offer fused glass instruction on May 15.
