Local Briefs: Abuse Shelter Seeks Donations, Community Events

The Citrus County Abuse Shelter Association (CASA) is seeking donations of daily items to keep its pantry stocked. The shelter needs household and cleaning supplies such as paper towels, Kleenex, trash bags, laundry detergent, and Lysol spray. Additionally, CASA is in need of pantry and food items like crackers, tea, eggs, butter, sugar, kid-friendly drinks and snacks, milk, cheese, Ramen, popcorn, pasta/noodles, beverages, mac and cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables, lunch meat, bacon, chicken or ground chicken, beef or ground beef, pork or ground pork, ketchup, mayonnaise, Ranch and other salad dressings/condiments, and cooking spices.

To make it easier to donate, CASA has created an Amazon Wishlist: a.co/c6Wobgs. Donations can be dropped off at the CASA Outreach office between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at 1100 E. Turner Camp Road, Inverness. Alternatively, items can also be dropped off at Carol’s Interiors and Floors, 6410 S. Suncoast Blvd. in Homosassa. The Homosassa River Alliance (HRA) is hosting its annual picnic on Thursday, May 14, at 6 p.m. at the Old Homosassa Civic Club. The event will be potluck style, with the HRA providing barbecue. Attendees are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share. During the picnic, HRA will honor Phyllis Colvin and the club’s Voice of the River Scholarship recipients.

Other community events include:

  1. The Citrus County Beekeepers’ 2026 Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) Scholarship application period is open. The scholarship is available to Citrus County 4-H or FFA students in grades 8 through 10.
  2. Aaron A. Weaver Chapter 776 Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) will conduct its bimonthly meeting at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, at the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce, 915 N. Suncoast Blvd., Crystal River.
  3. Friends of Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery will present the third annual Memorial Day Veterans’ Remembrance Ceremony at Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 23.
  4. A Memorial Day event commemorating the service and sacrifice of those veterans interred and memorialized at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 25.
