Citrus County residents can learn about growing vegetables with the help of master gardeners through a series of seminars. The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension will host the events, which cover topics such as “cool season” and ”warm season II” vegetables, at various library locations throughout Citrus County.
The seminars will take place on the following dates: August 3 at 1 p.m. at the Lakes Region library in Inverness, August 12 at 1 p.m. at the Central Ridge library in Beverly Hills, August 19 at 1 p.m. at the Floral City library, August 24 at 1 p.m. at the Crystal River library, and August 27 at 1 p.m. at the Homosassa library. There will also be a Zoom presentation on August 27 for those who prefer to participate online. Registration is required for the Zoom presentation, which can be accessed through Eventbrite. During the seminars, UF/IFAS Extension master gardener volunteers will discuss methods for starting transplants indoors, direct sowing of seeds, and steps to having a productive garden, regardless of the gardening method chosen. Participants can learn about the best times to plant cool season and warm season II vegetables, which include crops that need to be planted in August-September for a November harvest or in September-October for a December-February harvest.
