Inverness Named No. 2 Southern Small Town by USA Today

The City of Inverness has been officially named the No. 2 Best Small Town in the South by USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Inverness finished No. 3 last year, the first year it appeared in the top 10. The voting process took four weeks to decide between the 20 communities that were nominated.

Inverness, known as Florida’s “Small Town Done Right,” garnered strong public support in the final round of voting, reflecting broad appreciation for its community amenities, cultural attractions, and scenic surroundings, according to a USA Today press release. USA Today’s list evaluated towns for their unique charm, history, natural beauty and community character, ultimately opening the final rankings to public voting. According to its ballot entry, USA Today panelists described Inverness as a “lively downtown anchored by its historic courthouse square, where live music, festivals, markets and community events draw residents and visitors year‑round. Outdoor amenities such as the scenic Withlacoochee State Trail, local parks and nearby waterways contribute to the city’s appeal.”

Local favorites such as independently owned restaurants, specialty shops and cultural landmarks like the Valerie Theatre further distinguish the Inverness experience. The expert panel highlighted other aspects such as local attractions, walkability and the city’s historic downtown area.
