The Inverness City Council has approved a proposal to build two triplex buildings at 232 N. Trout Ave., a 0.42-acre parcel in the historic LaBelle neighborhood. The project, submitted by Liberty Investments Citrus County LLC, would split the property into two lots and construct three units on each, increasing density from 2.5 units per acre to 14.2 units per acre.
The debate over the six new apartments turned into a discussion about the city’s character. Mayor Bob Plaisted expressed concerns that the project would change the complexion of the neighborhood, while Councilwoman Jacquie Hepfer saw it as a way to bring back the area’s historic look. The council approved the land-use and zoning changes on first reading.
The proposal is the third and fourth triplex project by the same company. The discussion touched on the history of LaBelle, which was platted in January 1885, before Citrus County even existed. The city’s character has evolved over the years, with some residents expressing concerns about density and development.
The project moves forward after the council’s approval, but concerns about the city’s character and neighborhood density remain.
