Hernando High’s boys weightlifting team took top honors in both traditional and Olympic categories at the District 2A-9 meet held on Thursday, April 9, at Weeki Wachee High. The Leopards accumulated 47 points in traditional and 60 points in Olympic, surpassing their county rivals, including Nature Coast and Central, which had captured the conference championships in traditional and Olympic, respectively.
Under the guidance of head coach Wyndell ‘Chop’ Alexander, the team demonstrated remarkable improvement from their third-place finish in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference meet. Alexander attributed the team’s success to their hard work and dedication, noting that they were able to utilize all their lifters in the district meet, unlike the county meet where they were limited to 10 lifters. Koleton Cannon emerged as the lone traditional individual champion from Hernando, with a 425-pound total at 139 pounds. He also claimed the Olympic title with a total of 345 pounds.
In the Olympic category, Hernando had multiple individual winners, including Caden Heater at 119 pounds with 260 pounds, Braden White at 199 pounds with 485 pounds, and Wesley Howard at 238 pounds with 495 pounds. The team’s victory was a testament to their perseverance and commitment to their training program.
