SPRING HILL, Fla. , The Hernando County Veteran Community Partners Committee met July 17 at American Legion Post 418 on Edward R. Noll Drive in Spring Hill, focusing on an upcoming Stand Down event designed to bring critical resources directly to homeless and at-risk veterans in the county.
James Swanson, Hernando County Veteran Services Officer and U.S. Army veteran, called the Stand Down a “monumental” occasion. The event will feature more than 30 vendors, on-site showers, and a dental bus to provide care for homeless veterans. Donations collected at the event will support pets belonging to financially challenged veterans. Organizers are still finalizing a host location for the Stand Down.
The committee also outlined two upcoming fundraising and community events tied to the Stand Down effort. A Bike Night fundraiser is scheduled for July 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. at American Legion Post 418, where attendees are encouraged to bring a pet supply item as a donation. The Hernando County Vetoberfest will follow on October 3 from 2 to 9 p.m. at Anderson Snow Park, featuring food trucks, local vendors, a family-friendly atmosphere, and a resource area for veterans and first responders.
Swanson, who relocated to Florida from California after retiring, helped launch the committee just three months ago with only seven participants. The group has since grown to more than 33 members, drawing local veteran organizations, nonprofits, VA representatives, and community volunteers united around a single mission. “When people see genuine passion, genuine care, they want to help out,” Swanson said. The committee meets monthly with the goal of ensuring, in Swanson’s words, that “no veteran in Hernando County falls through the cracks.” For more information on the Stand Down event or how to get involved, visit the Hernando Sun or the Hernando County official website.
