Hernando County and Eastern Pasco County have quietly produced more than 30 professional athletes who reached Major League Baseball and the National Football League, and their stories are being celebrated through trading cards and local sports history. Names like Jim “Mudcat” Grant, Jerome Brown, Gene Nelson, Bob Tewksbury, Darren and Troy Hambrick, Bronson and Christian Arroyo, and Michael Penix Jr. all trace their roots to this region. While none of the local athletes have cards approaching the value of a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle or a Honus Wagner tobacco card, the collectibles still carry significant historical weight. Grant and Penix rookie cards each sell for around $10, while most other local players’ cards can be found for a few dollars or less online, in hobby shops, and at card shows. The cards represent more than monetary value, offering a tangible connection to the region’s remarkable sports pipeline to the pros.
Leading that list is Grant, widely considered the area’s most celebrated sports figure. Born Aug. 13, 1935, in Lacoochee, Grant first gained attention playing at Moore Academy in Dade City before Pasco High integrated, and later competed in local semi-pro leagues. He earned a scholarship to Florida A&M but left during his sophomore year to help his family through financial hardship. He signed a professional contract with the Cleveland Indians prior to the 1954 season.
Grant made his Major League debut for the Indians on April 17, 1958, and his rookie card appeared in the 1958 Topps set. His colorful nickname and flamboyant personality helped him rise to international fame as a pitcher. His journey from a small Pasco County town to the national spotlight remains one of the most compelling stories in the region’s sports history.
