Hernando County Driver Arrested on DUI, Drug Trafficking and Firearm Charges After Rear-End Crash

A Hernando County Sheriff’s Office traffic deputy witnessed a rear-end crash on June 24 at the intersection of County Line Road and Truce Circle, leading to the arrest of driver Tyler Sikes, 28, on DUI and multiple felony charges after investigators found drugs and firearms inside his vehicle.

Deputies said Sikes was driving a Ram pickup truck when he rear-ended another vehicle on County Line Road. The traffic deputy, who witnessed the crash, immediately stopped to render aid and investigate. During the investigation, Sikes showed signs of impairment and admitted to smoking marijuana before driving. He completed standardized field sobriety exercises and provided breath samples that registered 0.00 blood alcohol content. Deputies noted that drug-induced impairment can also result in a DUI arrest. Sikes also provided a urine sample, which was submitted to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for testing to identify substances in his system.

During the investigation, deputies discovered the following items inside Sikes’ vehicle:

  1. Approximately 47.3 grams of suspected methamphetamine
  2. 0.5 grams of fentanyl
  3. 0.7 grams of marijuana
  4. Drug paraphernalia and a digital scale
  5. A loaded handgun with ammunition
  6. A loaded AK-style rifle

Because Sikes is a convicted felon, the discovery of the firearms resulted in additional felony charges related to possession of firearms by a convicted felon. He was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence, along with multiple felony charges for narcotics trafficking and firearm possession. Sikes was booked into the Hernando County Detention Center without bond.
