Habitat for Humanity Breaks Ground on 300th Citrus County Home in Milestone Celebration

Habitat for Humanity of the Nature Coast broke ground Sept. 26 on its 300th home in Citrus County, drawing nearly 500 people to a community celebration in the Citrus Habitat community in Citrus Springs. Board members, sponsors, volunteers, homeowners and local leaders gathered to mark the milestone, which organizers called a landmark moment in the organization’s history of affordable homeownership in the region.

Justin Leech, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of the Nature Coast, spoke about the significance of reaching 300 homes and honored the legacy and community development vision of George Rusaw. Leech emphasized the organization’s continued commitment to expanding affordable homeownership opportunities for Citrus County families. The event featured family activities, food trucks and vendors, making it a full community celebration alongside the ceremonial groundbreaking.

Among the dignitaries attending were Citrus County Commissioner Janet Barek, Commissioner-elects Stacy Worthington and Holli Herndon, and County Administrator Steve Howard. Ms. Teen Florida Sarah Duncan also participated in the celebration. The Crystal River High School Choir and JROTC performed at the event, and Citrus County Fire Rescue and the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office were also represented.

Habitat for Humanity of the Nature Coast has steadily expanded its footprint across Citrus County over the years, providing working families with pathways to homeownership through volunteer labor and donated materials. The 300-home milestone reflects decades of community partnerships and fundraising efforts.
